Dronning Alexandrines Bro ( German Queen Alexandrine Bridge ), also called Mønbroen or Ulvsundbroen , is a 745.50 meter long bridge that crosses the Ulvsund and connects the Danish islands of Møn and Zealand . The building, named after the Danish Queen Alexandrine , was opened in 1943 and has since been considered the “most beautiful bridge in Denmark ”. Primærrute 59, which is used by around 5,500 vehicles every day, runs over the two-lane road bridge . The bridge was designed by Anker Engelund (1889–1961), civil engineer, professor and rector of the Copenhagen Polytechnic School from 1941 to 1959. He created a classic arched bridge with a superstructure of a large steel arch in the middle and ten iron arches below the roadway lying, being worn.
Dronning Alexandrines Bro is used as a motif on the 500 kroner banknotes . The banknote, drawn by the artist Karin Birgitte Lund, is part of a series published from 2009 to 2011 that, among other things, has Danish bridges as a theme.
history
After the council of Præstø in 1934 introduced taxes on all goods that were transported by ferry between Kalvehave on Zealand and Stege on Møn, while its own ferry between Kalvehave and Koster remained tax-free, this led to an uproar among the islanders. The local farmers' association on Møn felt compelled to push ahead with the construction of a bridge. In the end, the local council gave in to pressure from the bridge commission set up by the association and in 1937 asked the Minister for Public Works , Niels Peder Fisker , for permission to build a bridge over the Ulvsund. In January 1938, the minister approved the project and promised that the state would contribute half of the construction costs, while the remainder would be contributed by the surrounding communities.
Construction work began in June 1939, during which two construction workers were killed. After the outbreak of the Second World War , the building contractors initially had doubts as to whether the necessary building materials could be obtained, but the work proceeded according to plan. The Dronning Alexandrines Bro is one of the only bridges in Denmark, along with the Aggersundbroen , that could be completed during the war and in the post-war period. After four years of construction, the building was completed on May 30, 1943 by Queen Alexandrine and the Crown Prince couple, Frederik IX. and Ingrid of Sweden , inaugurated. The celebrations, in which 30,000 people took part, were also seen as an expression of a national demonstration against the German occupation forces. On the same day, following the event, the monarch and the crown prince couple inaugurated a road embankment in the south between Møn and Bogø, as well as the Bogø / Stubbekøbing ferry connection , so that Møn's connection to its neighboring islands could be completed.
After the municipal reform of 2007 and the nationalization of Primærrute 59, the bridge became the property of the Vejdirektoratet road construction authority , which is subordinate to the Danish Ministry of Transport .
