Drosera nidiformis is a carnivorous plant from the genus sundew ( Drosera ) within the family of sundew plants ( Droseraceae ).

Drosera nidiformis is a perennial herbaceous plant with upright leaves arranged like a nest (Latin nidiformis = nest- shaped ) .

Vegetative characteristics

The slightly hairy petioles are 2.5–3 cm long and about 1 mm wide. The leaf blades are 1–1.2 cm long and 0.4 cm wide. They are sparsely covered on the underside with whitish hair approx. 0.5 mm long. 1–2 main roots up to 6 cm long are formed, as well as 4–7 weaker ones arranged in tufts.

Generative characteristics

2–3 inflorescences are formed. The inflorescence stalks are strongly curved at the base. They are 17–35 cm high and about 1 mm thick. 5–16 flowers are in clusters at a distance of 2–3 cm. The five green sepals are obovate and opaque on the underside, they are approx. 2 mm long and 1.1 mm wide. The five, pale purple, obovate petals are approx. 4.5 mm long and 3 mm wide. The five stamens are about 1 mm long, with white stamens . The pollen is light yellow. The three styluses are divided into two branches each. They are approx. 1.8 mm long, pink, white at the base. The wedge-shaped, rounded scars are split into two ends. The approximately 0.7 mm large black seeds are broadly spindle-shaped. The seed coat is grooved like a rectangular net.

Occurrence

The species is endemic to South Africa . It occurs there in the east of the Eastern Cape and in KwaZulu-Natal .
