The Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary (officially Drumlin Farm Bird Sanctuary ) is a 206 acres (0.8 km² ) large reserve at Lincoln in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .
Protected area
The eponymous Drumlin Farm is located around a drumlin and is an active agricultural operation. It is open to visitors and offers 4 mi (6.4 km ) of hiking trails that are divided into several sections, 1.5 mi (2.4 km) of which are barrier-free . In addition to the farm's breeding animals, wild animals such as owls , foxes and fishing marten can also be observed. There is also a community garden on the premises .
The company was inherited from Louise Ayer Hatheway to the Audubon Society in 1955. She had already started inviting children to her farm while she was still alive and showing them where their food came from. To this day there are corresponding training programs for children and adults offered by the Audubon Society.
With its diverse habitats, the farm is also an important bird sanctuary . The green areas for blackbirds , larkbirds and other grassland birds represent an important breeding area; in other areas, almost 40 nesting sites have been artificially set up for red-throated warblers , swallows and black -headed tits . The data collected will be analyzed in the Cornell University Ornithology Laboratory to assess US-wide developments in bird populations.
