Despite his talent, he comes into conflict with the leader of the band because he doesn't want to stick to the rules of the game. Devon pulls himself together, learns to read notes, clarifies his problems with others and helps to win the upcoming competition.

Summary

The film Drumline revolves around the talented snare drummer, Devon Miles (Nick Cannon), who receives a scholarship with the help of which he moves to a music school in Atlanta, A&T University. Devon is bothered by the fact that the newcomers have to get up very early in the morning and are trained militarily. Devon therefore often turns against the group and does not learn what he should. An unofficial school rule says that deviants get shaved bald. At the university there are not only musicians, but also dancers, such as Laila, with whom Devon falls in love and tries hard to get together with her. After a while, Devon is so good that he wants to prove it to Shawn Taylor, the drum teacher. He moves up to the highest class of musicians and demonstrates his skills on a prominent occasion by perfectly playing the solo part on the first big performance. When Devon plays his solo part again on the second appearance because the success has done it all, he gets into a fight with the drumsolist of the competing band, which is why he is expelled from the band. To make matters worse, it is now publicly known that Devon cannot read notes. He is therefore threatened with expulsion from the boarding school, which he is vehemently trying to prevent. Devon was on his way to his snare and met Taylor, who was practicing in the band room. Devon challenges him and wins. The performance is recorded by a note recorder and can therefore be checked. Even Taylor is enthusiastic about this all-rounder and goes with Devon to the director, whom Devon apologizes for his previous behavior. Together they submit a proposal for the upcoming music festival. The suggestion is well received and Taylor, Devon, and the director practice with the band. Taylor and Devon become friends, and Taylor teaches Devon to read music. Laila had long wanted to introduce Devon to her parents. But since they had attended the duel between the two music university bands and the guy who was fighting, it was impossible so far. But now the big music festival was getting closer. Actually, Devon shouldn't play along. But when his band reached the finals with outstanding performances, that could only be done with drums. Devon as the undisputed best player denies this part. In the finals of the film, A&T University wins and Devon is again accepted into the P1 master class. That also convinced Laila's parents.

Reviews

"A tolerably entertaining, but carefully staged mixture of comedy, romance, musical and drama with sympathetic main characters and a lot of drum duels that take getting used to."
