Dušan Mlinšek

Dušan Mlinšek (born September 30, 1925 in Velenje , Yugoslavia , † December 15, 2020 ) was a Yugoslav and Slovenian forest scientist .

Life

Dušan Mlinšek was drafted into the German armed forces in 1944 while he was attending a grammar school in Celje and initially fought on the Eastern Front , but was able to flee there and joined the partisans in his home country . After the end of the war he studied forest science at the University of Zagreb , after which he worked at the Ministry of Forestry of the SR Slovenia , for which he was in charge of forest management in the Slovenj Gradec area from 1953 to 1960 . At that time he came with Hans Leibundgut , Professor of Forest Management at ETH Zurich, who was then working in Yugoslavia on behalf of the FAO, in contact, where he received his doctorate in 1959 . He arranged for sustainable forest management methods that he had got to know in Switzerland to be adopted in the forests of SR Slovenia .

From 1960 he was assistant professor at the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana , from 1971 full professor for forestry (later forestry and landscape ecology ). In the 1970s he initiated the establishment of natural forest reserves , the development of which he scientifically evaluated.

From 1982 Mlinšek was chairman of the International Association of Forest Research Institutes and in 1989 he was the initiator and founding member of the Pro Silva organization . Even after his retirement he was committed to nature conservation and forest education .
