You Are Terrorist is a two-minute web video by video artist Alexander Lehmann from May 2009.
Content, creation and publication
The video refers to the campaign You are Germany and satirically addresses the law on data retention , which came into force on January 1, 2008. It is particularly about the impending danger of a surveillance state.
The film was made as Lehmann's thesis in design, the music comes from the music producer iambic.
The short film was published on May 13, 2009 on a dedicated website and on YouTube . A French-language version and subtitles in English, Chinese, Spanish, Hungarian and Greek were later created.
Effect and reception
The video became particularly popular in the context of the debate about the blocking of Internet content in Germany . Spiegel-Online describes the video as a lesson about the new laws and the effect of satire. After the film was released, the agency that had designed the Du bist Deutschland campaign and saw its rights violated were threatened with legal action. After protests on the Internet, the agency withdrew its claims.
The film was shown at the Bitfilm Festival in Tel-Aviv in October 2009 and won the “Politicool Award”. At the short film festival interfilm in Berlin in November 2009, Du bist Terrorist won the audience award of the Viral Video Awards. Also in December 2009 the audience award at the 24h festival in Nuremberg.
At the international spotlight festival 2010, the video was awarded the Gold Students Award by the specialist jury in the “web & mobile” category and also received the silver audience award. The entry was also awarded gold in the “Vision” category.
