This led to his expulsion from Angola by order of the Prime Minister Marcelo Caetano (1906–1980). Duarte later continued his contacts with various political leaders in the Portuguese-speaking countries.

East Timor

Duarte was a supporter of the independence of East Timor , a former Portuguese colony that was forcibly occupied by Indonesia in 1975 . Even before the world leaders regarded this fact as a problem, Duarte organized several national and international campaigns in the interest of East Timor, including "Timor 87 Vamos ajudar" and "Lusitânia Expresso" 1992. 1997 beat Duarte Indonesian Vice President B. J. Habibie before a Hold referendum on independence from East Timor. In 1999, after Habibie became President of Indonesia, the referendum that led to East Timor's independence was held.
