The Dubai Opera is a multifunctional cultural center in the Downtown Dubai district in Dubai , which is used for opera, theater, ballet and concert events as well as conferences and exhibitions. The building opened on August 31, 2016 with an appearance by Placido Domingo .
planning
An original design by the architect Zaha Hadid and the German Patrik Schumacher from 2008 was stopped and discarded in the course of the real estate crisis in Dubai.
The House
The opera offers space for up to 2000 people and, depending on the event, can be converted into a traditional theater, a concert hall or an exhibition room.
program
The Dubai Opera has neither its own ensemble, nor a choir and orchestra. Classical operas only represent around a sixth of the events and are performed by guest ensembles. Since its opening, the following program lines have emerged:
- classical opera , mostly popular works such as Verdi's Aida or Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin , both presented by the Polish National Opera, but also the Mandela Trilogy as a guest performance by the Cape Town Opera ,
- classical ballet , such as Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet , presented by a Moscow dance company,
- classical concerts, such as the Verbier Festival Orchestra or the European Union Youth Orchestra , recitals, for example by Bryn Terfel ,
- Musicals like Evita by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber ,
- Concerts from the fields of jazz , rock and pop , for example by Hugh Masekela or Rufus Wainwright ,
- Family programs such as Harry Potter in Concert , the Christmas special Jingle Bells Favorites or the Shaolin Warriors from China,
- Occasionally, there are also Arabic programs, such as an evening with Omar Khairat or the For the Love of Words program with poets from different cultures, including Khalid Albudoor or Nujoom Nasser Alghanem , both from the Emirates.
Target groups are on the one hand tourists and residents of the Emirates who come from the western world, on the other hand also Arab population groups who are interested in western culture.
