Duckeella is a genus within the family of orchids (Orchidaceae). The three species since 2015are common in northern South America .

description

Vegetative characteristics

The Duckeella species are perennial herbaceous plants . They thrive terrestrially. The roots are slender, fibrous and hairy. In contrast to related genera, the stem is not hollow. Several leaves are at the base of the shoot, they are linear and parallel-veined .

Generative characteristics

The racemose inflorescence that arises from the side of the leaves sometimes contains only one, usually four to twelve flowers. The flowers are resupinated , relatively large and fragrant. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and threefold. The yellow bracts are not fused together, they are all similarly shaped. The inner bracts end more pointed than the outer ones, the lip is slightly three-lobed at the base and covered with several longitudinal keels. The column is elongated and slender, the stamen at its end is bent down by more than 90 ° relative to the column axis. On both sides of the stamen the column has a short staminodium . The pollen is not stuck together to form pollinia .

A capsule fruit is formed. The seeds are spindle-shaped, with characteristic gaps between the individual cells of the seed coat (testa).

Occurrence

The neotropical genus Duckeella is common in northern South America. It populates there a small area in Venezuela and comes in neighboring Colombia and Brazil. Two species Duckeella adolphii and Duckeella pauciflora grow in savannahs at altitudes between 100 and 200 meters. Duckeella alticola occurs at much higher locations between 1300 and 2000 meters.

Systematics and botanical history

The genus Duckeella belongs to the tribe Pogonieae in the subfamily Vanilloideae within the family Orchidaceae . It is the sister group to the remaining genera of the Pogonieae (with the exception of the uncertainly placed genus Pogoniopsis ).

The genus duckeella was 1940 Paulo Campos Porto and Alexander Curt Brade drawn up . Type species is Duckeella adolphii . The generic name Duckeella honors the Brazilian botanist Walter Adolpho Ducke (1876-1959).

Since 2015 there are three species in the genus Duckeella :

  • Duckeella adolphii Porto & Brade (Syn .: Duckeella pauciflora Garay ): It occurs from Colombia to southern Venezuela and the Brazilian state of Amazonas .
  • Duckeella alticola C. Schweinf. : It occurs from southern Venezuela to northern Brazil.
  • Duckeella humboldtii Kolan. & Szlach. : It was first described in 2015 from Colombia.
