Dunja

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dunja , also transcribed Dunia or Dunya (also Donia , in former French colonies Dounia or Dounya ), is a female given name that is common in Russia , Southeast Europe and the Arabic-speaking area and, depending on the region, can be traced back to a Greek , Slavic or Arabic origin .

Origin of name

The Russian name Дуня ( Dunja ) goes back to the Greek name Ευδοκία ( Eudokía ) and came to Russia with the veneration of St. Eudokia . There it became Евдокия ( Jevdokija ), dialect was Авдотья ( Avdotja ), of which Дуня ( Dunja ) is a pet form . The word εὐδοκία ( eudokía ) does not appear in classical Greek, in the Septuagint it mostly stands for Hebrew רָצוֹן( razon or ratson ), "good pleasure, grace". The original motive for naming is probably gratitude towards God, who in his grace gave the child. Regardless of this, Dunja means “ quince ” in Serbian and Croatian . The name popular in the former Yugoslavia - besides Serbia and Croatia also in Slovenia - is not traced back to the name of the fruit, but to the Russian name.

The name common in the Arabic-speaking worldدنيا, transcribed as Dunja, Dunia or Dunya, is from the Arabic word for "world" or "this side" (دُنْيا: Dunyā or Dunjā), which is where the Turkish name for planet earth ( Dünya ) comes from.
