The Duo Sonnenschirm is a German music group with cabaret and folkloristic features. It describes itself as the inventor of the "brutal romantic cabaret" and consists of Dieter Beckert (born October 22, 1950 in Neustrelitz ) and Jürgen B. Wolff (born October 15, 1953 in Plauen ). The instrumentation consists of western guitar , electric guitar , concertina , forest zither , dobro , trumpet , table harmonium , flugelhorn as well as numerous devices and objects that can be used in a variety of ways, such as a megaphone .

Band history

The duo's roots lie in the folk movement of the 1970s in the GDR . In addition to his original job as a graphic artist, Wolff was one of the founders of the folk band Folkländer in 1976. Beckert completed an apprenticeship as a lumberjack and studied forestry in Tharandt . He then took up singing studies at the Dresden Music Academy . He was also a puppeteer at the State Puppet Theater in Dresden . Several music projects followed with both artists.

The first joint collaboration came about in 1982 with the previously unlisted folk opera Die Boten des Todes . In 1984 the work on joint texts intensified; the first book was created, Das Hanebuch from 1984 , which, however, only appeared ten years later.

The first joint appearance as De Mefistos took place on March 15, 1986 , shortly afterwards the name was changed to Duo Parasol - according to the artist, in order to protect against the rising and setting suns (like those on the sleeves of the blue shirts of the GDR youth organization FDJ were pictured) to offer. Numerous titles were created that pointedly depict the omnipresent absurdities of everyday life in the GDR. In 1987 the duo won two prizes at the GDR Chansontage . In 1989 the first record, Shading by Duo Parasol , appeared on the GDR record label Amiga . For this program they received the Wilhelmshavener Knurrhahn Kleinkunstpreis .

After the end of the GDR, the Duo Parasol continued. Settled in dialect in the Saxon-Thuringian area, worries and hardships, but also joys and memories of former GDR citizens were discussed. Awards were made, such as the German Record Critics' Prize in March 1993 for the CD Live from the O-Zone Hole .

After numerous concert tours as well as CD and book projects, the temporary separation and implementation of solo and alternative projects took place in autumn 1997. In the following year, Jürgen B. Wolff founded the Leipzig Folk Session Band together with musicians such as Jens Paul Wollenberg, Ulrich Doberenz and Manfred Wagenbreth .

In 2005 the duo reunited. The CD Cheap Pleasure was recorded, which again received the German Record Critics' Prize. Topics such as the Second Iraq War were discussed here. After an autumn tour in 2005, the anniversary tour for the 20th anniversary of the Duo Parasol took place in the spring of 2006, from which a new album, Podeststücke , emerged. In 2007 the band toured Germany on their 2007 Parasol Tour - preferably in Eastern Germany. In 2010, the duo was on the way with the program " Waiver is no solution" .

The studio album Duolektik was also awarded the German Record Critics' Prize in 2010.
