Durex ( acronym of English du rability r eliability ex cellence "durability reliability goodness") is a Founded in 1929, British brand in what is now owned by Reckitt Benckiser , under the internationally accessories for sexual intercourse is sold. Durex is the market leader with sales of condoms in more than 150 countries and a 35 percent market share of global condom sales.

history

The London Rubber Company - actually specialized in hairdressing supplies - was founded in 1915 and also sold imported condoms. In 1929 the Durex brand was created. The first Durex condom factory opened in Hackney in 1932 and focused on the production of latex condoms . After a significant increase in demand, the London Rubber Company was registered as a stock corporation and there was a switch to fully automated production. The internationalization began with the acquisition of Julius Schmid Inc. With the installation of machines since 1964, the spread was further promoted and in 1978 it was publicly advertised as a Formula 1 sponsor.

In 1980 condoms began to be sold in restaurants , grocery stores and supermarkets around the world after their preventive use increased significantly as a result of the discovery of AIDS and the HI virus. Thereupon Durex started the first far-reaching advertising and awareness campaign with posters and on television.

Until 2010, the Durex brand belonged to SSL International . Since the acquisition of SSL International in July 2010, Durex has been part of Reckitt Benckiser , is sold in more than 150 countries and is the market leader in over 40 countries. With sales of four billion units annually and a market share of 35% of global condom sales, Durex is also the global market leader.

1920s-1970s

Durex, then owned by the London Rubber Company, was the first British condom manufacturer in the world to start promoting and supplying condoms. Further developments of this time:

  • Introduction of automatic dipping lines, which made production more efficient and improved quality
  • Electronic test for troubleshooting
  • Introduction of the first wet condom
  • As the first condom brand, Durex makes the British Kitemark quality seal the standard
  • Introduction of an anatomically shaped condom

1990s

Further developments:

  • Development of a condom that is supposed to delay climax
  • Introduction of a range of colored and flavored condoms
  • Conducting and publishing a global survey on sex
  • Manufacture of a latex-free condom made of polyurethane
  • Development of a condom with an "Easy On" fit that is easier to unroll and should offer a more comfortable fit
  • Manufacture of ribbed condoms for more stimulation during sex

Studies

Durex has been running the Global Sex Survey since 2001, which focuses on the topics of sexuality , partnership and education worldwide and broken down by country. In April 2007, the current Durex study, now titled Durex Sexual Wellbeing Global Survey 07/08 , was published. If purely physical aspects were previously examined (e.g. duration and frequency of the sexual act), the new study looks at a conglomerate of physical, social and emotional factors. In order to provide a better overview of the results, the Durex Sexual Wellbeing Global Survey 07/08 (SWGS for short) was divided into several partial studies. While the first one dealt with the topic of sexual satisfaction , the second with the subtitle In the Bedroom focused on bedroom habits worldwide. In the third wave of studies, The Big O , the subjects of orgasm ability, frequency, intensity and satisfaction were examined. In 2008, the international study The Face of Global Sex 2008 - The path to sexual confidence - was published, which examined the practical benefits of sex education classes by comparing data from 26,000 people worldwide. The analysis compared the levels of sexual self-confidence (as an indicator of successful sex education classes) with general security.
