During the Second World War, the airport was occupied by the German military from 1940 to 1944.

In the late 1940s, the airfield was restored and reactivated. Since the 1950s, it has mainly been used as a station for helicopters .

The civil sharing began in the 1980s, mainly to supply the oil industry.

Military use

De Kooy is home to the on- board helicopters of the Koninklijke Marine , which flew the Lynx in two squadrons, 7th and 860th Squadron , until 2012 .

The first of 12 NH90s (NFH) arrived at the 860th Squadron in May 2010 . The 860th is the squadron, later the NH90 flight operations began with the 7th, whose task is the further development and training.

Civil use

Den Helder Airport has developed into one of the largest heliports in the Netherlands in recent years. Workers and urgently needed cargo such as spare parts or pharmaceuticals are flown to and from the drilling rigs and production platforms in the North Sea.

The airport is also used by the Dutch Navy, various flight schools, an aerial photography company and regular flights to the West Frisian Islands, particularly Texel .
