TEG and forerunner (1880 to 1923)
The operating company of the Linzer Pferdetramway (opened in 1880) was the Linzer Tramway Gesellschaft , renamed Tramway Linz-Urfahr, L. Ph. Schmidt & Cie . In 1885 . In 1887 the Linz merchant Hermann Hofmann bought the company, which now operated under Tramway Linz – Urfahr, H. Hofmann . Hofmann sold the tramway in 1896 to the Consortium for the construction of electrical systems in Linz. In 1897 the Tramway- und Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft Linz – Urfahr (TEG) was founded, which took over the power plant and the electric tram with all rights and obligations from the consortium .

ESG (1923 to 2000)
On June 5, 1923, the company was renamed Electricity and Tram Company Linz (ESG). In 1939 the company was changed to Linzer Elektrizitäts- und Straßenbahn Aktiengesellschaft due to the German Stock
Corporation Act. In 1975, for tax reasons, the company was transferred to the Linzer Elektrizitäts-, Fernwärme- und Verkehrsbetriebe Aktiengesellschaft, founded on December 12, 1975 . The old company was to a small extent (1.8%) privately owned, which is why some tax and fee exemptions could not be used. The new ESG (the abbreviation was retained) belonged 100% to the city of Linz.

Forerunner company SBL - Stadtbetriebe Linz GmbH

The second predecessor company of Linz AG was SBL-Stadtbetriebe Linz GmbH. These were founded in 1970 and emerged from the former municipal utilities. The SBL comprised the following business areas: water, sewage, waste, port, baths, funerals and cemeteries, IWA, which are now part of Linz Service GmbH. In addition, there were the business areas of gas, installation (both today in Linz Gas / Wärme GmbH), construction management and central workshops and vehicle fleet (both today in Managementservice Linz GmbH).

Shortly before the merger with ESG to form Linz AG, SBL took over the care of the cemeteries (previously only funerals) in 1997 and in 1999 the waste division was incorporated (by the magistrate).
In the municipal utilities (forerunner of the SBL before 1970) there were still the areas of urban folk kitchens and the urban slaughterhouse.
