EWTN Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

EWTN Germany (officially EWTN TV, also "EWTN Catholic TV" to distinguish it from the international program) is the German edition of the religious television broadcaster EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network) with its headquarters in Irondale near Birmingham (Alabama) in the United States. The broadcaster of the German-language program is based in Cologne and has been broadcasting a 24-hour program in German since 2011. EWTN is financed exclusively through donations.

history

After EWTN was already represented in the English and Spanish-speaking areas, mother Angelica commissioned the German Martin Rothweiler to found EWTN in Germany in 2000 . It started with two or three people, the office was initially in the basement of the Rothweiler family's private house. In Germany, the non-profit EWTN-TV gGmbH started work in July 2000, but it has not yet broadcast on its own responsibility. In October 2000 the first German-language productions went on air in Europe. The program was run by parent company EWTN, Inc. on the basis of a license from the UK regulator OFCOM. The proportion of German broadcasts was continuously expanded. EWTN has been broadcasting a 24-hour program in German since 2011. EWTN Germany now has a workforce of twelve (as of 2018). The station received the German broadcasting license from the State Agency for Media North Rhine-Westphalia (LfM) in August 2016. Before that, the station broadcast with a broadcasting license from the Office of Communications , with which a program could also be broadcast in Germany.

Mother Angelica died on March 27, 2016 at the age of 92. At the anniversary celebration, Martin Rothweiler quoted a saying by the nun:

“'One leg on the floor, one leg in the air and a queasy feeling in the stomach' - that shows all her supernaturalness, but also how grounded this great woman was. We want to continue their mission with passion in order to bring people into contact with Christ! "

- Martin Rothweiler : CNA German, March 28, 2018

Even Pope Francis praised the services of the "TV-nun". When EWTN employees showed Pope Francis a portrait of her a few days after Mother Angelica's death, he reacted spontaneously:

"En el cielo!"

"She is in heaven!"

- Pope Francis : on Mother Angelica after the general audience on March 30, 2016

EWTN Germany has been based in Hansestraße 85 in Cologne since 2016. The broadcaster is only financed by donations from its viewers and does not receive any church taxes . In addition, a non-profit EWTN-TV foundation was established.
