The Eastern Highlands are a mountain range in the east of the African state of Zimbabwe and form its border with Mozambique .
The Eastern Highlands consist of three mountain groups: Nyanga with its national park (in the north, with the highest mountain in Zimbabwe, Mount Nyangani , 2592 m, and the second highest waterfall in Africa, the Mutarazi Falls on the Pungwe ) and the Honde Valley , which leads to Mozambique , Bvumba (in the middle, with the town of Mutare ) and the Chimanimani National Park area (in the south). The area is sparsely populated, overgrown with grass or forest.
The high altitudes offer a cooler and more humid climate than other parts of Africa . The mountain range serves as a watershed towards the Indian Ocean and towards the Zimbabwean River Save .
Larger areas correspond to the type of the East African forest savanna Miombo with the characteristic Brachystegia . Representatives of the rich fauna include diademed and white-throated monkeys as well as golden-hooded turaco and crowned eagle from the bird world, as well as a variety of skinks , geckos , lizards , frogs , toads and snakes .
