The Eastgate is a shopping center opened in 2005 at Marzahner Tor in the Marzahn district of Berlin , built on behalf of the ECE Projektmanagement group . When it was opened, it was the largest shopping center in the eastern districts of Berlin. It serves as a shopping and adventure center for the Marzahn and Hellersdorf catchment areas and employs around 1,000 people. A complex of postal and service cube and the Marzahner Tor department store , which had been built in 1987/1988 for the then new city district, were demolished for the construction.

Description and offers

The Eastgate seen from the west

The Eastgate is designed in a futuristic architecture on an almost square area with parking spaces integrated on the roof. The architectural design was based on plans by the office community Jost Hering, Klaus M. Hoffmann, Ragna Carstens and Enno Schmacker from Hamburg , the implementation planning was done by npp Noack Planning and Project Development GmbH from Dresden . The construction work was in the hands of Wayss & Freytag Schlüsselfertigbau AG , department shopping centers from Göttingen . From the groundbreaking ceremony on November 28, 2003 to the topping-out ceremony in spring 2005, construction took less than two years to the inauguration.

Eastgate complete with connection to the S-Bahn station

The promenade levels are on two sales floors. Well-known clothing brands such as C&A , H&M , Peek & Cloppenburg , Deichmann or New Yorker have rented space, as well as electronics stores ( Saturn ), grocery stores ( Rewe ), boutiques and numerous other specialist shops in the fields of cosmetics, jewelry, optics, bookstores, etc. Shopping can be combined with a visit to restaurants and cafés, which occupy a total of 3000 m². Two generous rotundas with a diameter of around 30 meters that extend over all floors , an event plaza with an open-air stage, fountains with water features and a children's paradise form the attractions in the building, along with seasonal decorations. Fashion shows, music festivals, sports comparisons such as street football , beach volleyball or free climbing and other cultural events are organized and presented here. The entire center is designed to be barrier-free .

In addition to the shops, there are around 1400 m² of office and practice space.

The center management publishes a regular customer magazine that comes into households as a supplement to the Berlin subscription daily newspapers. A special children's magazine has recently been added ( Galino - Das Kindermagazin ) and the in-house newspaper has been redesigned.

A newly created space with the Marzahn bus station in front of the Eastgate was opened on April 28, 2012.

In the immediate vicinity of Eastgate there are the rather small-scale offers of the shops on the Marzahner Promenade and the Le Prom leisure center , which houses the UCI Kinowelt on Eastgate , a bowling facility and several restaurants.
