Eastside 100

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eastside 100 was an oval race of the German Formula 3 Cup and the first ever oval race in a European formula racing series . It took place in 2005 and 2006 on the EuroSpeedway Lausitz . Before that, the last time there was a monoposto race on the Trioval was the Champ Car event German 500 in 2003.

overview

The weekend basically ran like any other of the RECARO Formula 3 Cups: There were two 25-minute races. However, as usual for oval races, these were started 'on the fly', which was a novelty for the Formula 3 Cup. The use of spotters to support the drivers was also uncharted territory .

requirements

vehicles

At the Eastside 100, the cars were equipped with special oval tires from Hankook . There were also additional provisions regarding wing settings, vehicle height and camber in order to be able to guarantee a minimum level of downforce. In this way, average speeds of over 250 km / h could be achieved. In the event of precipitation, in which oval races are not possible, the Grand Prix course should be used.

driver

Before the race weekend, a two-day rookie test was carried out, at the end of which the participating drivers could normally receive the necessary oval license, which was also valid for oval races outside of Formula 3.

Summary

The winners were: Jan Seyffarth (1st race 2005), Ho-Pin Tung (1st race 2006) and twice the Dutchman Ferdinand Kool . Other well-known participants were: Peter Elkmann , Harald Schlegelmilch , Frank Kechele , Nico Hülkenberg , Renger van der Zande and Cyndie Allemann (who later had to contest oval races in the Indy Lights series).

During the Friday test in 2006, the British title contender Joey Foster suffered a lumbar fracture and had to undergo three operations as a result.

After a good 10,000 spectators attended the first edition, the number of visitors rose to 16,000 in the following year.

The event has not taken place since 2007.
