The Ebenberg is a 160 m high elevation in the south of the city of Landau in the Palatinate . In the east it is bounded by the Palatinate Maximiliansbahn , in the south by the federal highway 38 and in the north by the Birnbach .

history

In 1828 this elevation - at that time still a 25 hectare pasture area - was owned by the military. After the Second World War, the 230 hectare area was used by the French armed forces as a military training area. Up until 1983 there was also a Nike air defense position, which was then converted into a Patriot air defense position, which was in use until 1994.

Glider airfield

Already at the beginning of the 1950s, the Landau glider pilots were allowed to set up an airfield on the Ebenberg. The first glider club on the Ebenberg was the Aero-Club-Landau, shortly afterwards the DJK-Landau followed. After the French left, the airfield was bought by the two clubs.

Nature reserve

The "nature reserve Ebenberg" (NSG-7313-200) has a size of 217.55  ha . It was placed under protection on November 3, 1999 by the district government of Rheinhessen-Pfalz .

The protection purpose is "the preservation and development of the Ebenberg as a near-natural area, in particular of large-scale, near-natural open land areas with grasslands , semi -arid grassland , bushes, hedges, field trees, groups of trees and individual trees and of areas that develop naturally, as well as the near-natural development of forest stands as locations of wild plants and plant communities that are characteristic, rare or endangered for these habitat types, and as food, Teillebens- and retreat to these habitat types bound, rare or threatened in their existence of wildlife species, especially rare species of birds and bats, and because of their special Character, outstanding beauty and because of the rarity of near-natural areas on loess sites ”. The nature reserve is managed by DBU Naturerbe GmbH.
