Eberhard Buchborn

Eberhard Buchborn (born September 20, 1921 in Breslau ; † June 6,  2009 in Grünwald ) was a German physician .

Career

Eberhard Buchborn studied medicine in Frankfurt am Main and received his doctorate in 1948 with a study on cardiac and kidney complications of diphtheria. He was a student of Herbert Schwiegk and completed his habilitation in Munich in 1956. In 1966 he was appointed to the chair of the Medical University Polyclinic and the Medical Clinic Merheim at the University of Cologne . In 1971 he became the director of the downtown medical clinic at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , succeeding Schwiegk at the chair for internal medicine . As a scientist, Eberhard Buchborn has dealt with problems of kidney diseases, renal hypertension, dialysis and endocrinology.

Buchborn was in demand as a consultant and member of the board of directors because of his fair, balanced nature. Among other things, he was a member of the drug approval commission at the Federal Ministry of Health and the clinical research groups commission of the Max Planck Society for many years . Buchborn was also a member of the Presidium of the Board of Trustees for Dialysis and Kidney Transplantation. From 1984 to 1990 Buchborn was Vice President of the German Research Foundation . and from 1990 to 1992 chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft .

Since 1981 Buchborn was the editor of the standard work “ Handbook of Internal Medicine ”. He was chairman of the German Society for Internal Medicine and President of the 86th Congress of Internists in 1980. In 1985 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina learned society . Buchborn was elected honorary member of the German Society for Internal Medicine in 1991.
