Eberhard Jochem (born January 18, 1942 in Essen ) is a German energy scientist. He is an internationally recognized scientist in the technical and economic field of the rational use of energy as well as environmental and climate protection .

Jochem is also an expert in energy policy. Here he came out particularly with his work on the positive effects of energy efficiency on employment and growth, as well as their influence on energy demand policy in the OECD .

Life

Jochem studied process engineering and economics at the RWTH Aachen University and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) as well as the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU) . In 1971 he was at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at TUM with the work "to Oberflächensublimation and molecular flow in the freeze-drying of thin films" doctorate .

From 1969 to 1971 he was initially a lecturer in technology at the Oskar von Miller Polytechnic Munich , today's Munich University of Applied Sciences . In 1971 he became a research fellow at Harvard University Boston . From 1972 he worked for DECHEMA in Frankfurt am Main, and in 1973 he moved to the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research in Karlsruhe as a research assistant . In 1978 he became head of the system technology department there, and in 1983 deputy director of the ISI.

From 1978 to 1999 he held lectureships in the fields of technology assessment, economics of natural resources, energy management and energy policy at the Universities of Karlsruhe and Kassel .

1999 Eberhard Jochem received a call to the ETH Zurich as a professor of energy and economics . He is also founding director of the "Center for Energy Policy and Economies (CEPE)" at ETH Zurich, which he initiated with Massimo Filippini and Daniel Spreng. He also conducts research with the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) in Karlsruhe.

Jochem is a member of several international bodies. He was Vice President of Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from 1997 to 2002 and from 1999 to 2002 a member of the inquiry commission "Sustainable Energy Supply under the Conditions of Globalization and Liberalization" of the German Bundestag . Since 1998 he has been a member of the Advisory Board for Energy Perspectives of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) ; since 2001 member of the Council for Sustainable Development of the German Federal Government ("Sustainability Council"). Since 2005 he has been chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Institute for Solar Energy Supply Technology (ISET) at the University of Kassel .

In 2001 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon . Since 2005 he has been a member of the Swiss Academy of Technical Sciences (SATW) .

Jochem has published 6 books, more than 70 research reports and book chapters, and more than 140 specialist publications. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the journal Energy & Environment and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the journal Climate Policy.

Eberhard Jochem has been a member of the Catholic student association KDSt.V. since 1962 . Franconia Aachen in the CV .

Fight for the climate

In the spring of 2001, Eberhard Jochem initiated a memorandum addressed to US President George W. Bush , in which he was asked to rethink US climate policy and not to abandon ratification of the Kyoto Protocol by the US. The memorandum, which was signed by 125 renowned European climate researchers from 15 Western, Central and Eastern European countries, was sent to President Bush in early July 2001.

Awards

In 2007 he received a scientific award from the Fondatione Energia et Gestore Servici for his work in the field of sustainable development and was co-laureate of the Nobel Prize for the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In 2009 he received the Bayer Climate Award, endowed with 50,000 euros, for his groundbreaking contributions to energy efficiency. In 2014 he received the BAUM environmental science award for his services to the development of energy efficiency networks in medium-sized businesses and large companies.
