The Catholic German Student Union Franconia zu Aachen im CV (KDStV Franconia im CV) is a Catholic, German, colored student union at the RWTH Aachen , which provides the cathedral guard of the Aachen Cathedral . She belongs to the Cartell Association (CV).

The association forbids its members to participate in duels and courses . Only male, Catholic students who have a command of the German language, feel connected to German culture and study at an Aachen university can become full members.

The liaison members are called Aachen Francs . Franconia is number 23 in the official order of the Cartel connections. The official abbreviation is FcA .

history

The KDStV Franconia was founded on October 17, 1898 in Aachen as a CV association. On November 20 of the same year, its statutes were approved by the Senate of the Technical University of Aachen , which made it recognized as a corporation at the university. On December 18, 1898, the KDStV Franconia was included in the Cartell Association (CV) under the sponsorship of the KDStV Bavaria Bonn . From 1906 Oswald Höhl was the alliance's first Philistine senior.

From 1906 to 1907 Franconia took over the suburb (CV chairmanship) with Paul Hurck as suburb president, since then she no longer participates in the suburb. On January 12, 1908, the Franconia student dormitory association was founded with the aim of making it possible for the association to purchase a house, since from 1898 to 1911 association events only took place in inns such as the Wehrlichen Schmied and the Reichshof . In April 1911 a house at Turmstrasse 36 was acquired.

No colors were worn in public during the First World War . On January 1, 1917, the Frankenhaus was closed, and in 1918 it was confiscated, which restricted but did not prevent communication.

On March 9, 1920 Franconia founded the subsidiary KDStV Kaiserpfalz zu Aachen due to too much activity . In 1924 the Schwarz-Grün-Gold (SGG) appeared for the first time as a liaison journal. The Frankenhaus was inaugurated in 1926.

During the National Socialist era, Franconia helped to vote out the leadership of the Cartell Association of German Catholic Student Associations , because in 1933 it had not directly assured Adolf Hitler of its allegiance. On November 3, 1935, due to the restructuring in the connections at that time, the last pub in full colors took place. On June 1, 1936, Aktivitas was dissolved by the old gentry, in 1937 the Frankenhaus was sold and in 1938 the old gentlemen's association was forcibly dissolved.

Franconia house from 1959

In 1945 the old gentlemen's association was re-established. On February 24, 1947, the Amicitia group was founded , which later became the Roland group . In May of the same year, the old gentlemen's association took over the sponsorship of this Roland group and handed over the connecting colors. In November 1947 a new house was bought at Kruppstrasse 12. (Today the house is the seat of the KDStV Makaria.) On May 31, 1949, the Roland group was renamed Aktivitas of the KDStV Franconia and was recognized again on June 28, 1950 by the Rector and Senate of RWTH Aachen University.

In 1954, the property at Turmstrasse 36 was repossessed and in 1957 the house at Ludwigsallee 101 was bought, which was then inaugurated as a new fraternity house for the 60th Foundation Festival in 1959.

In May 1999 Franconia celebrated its 100th foundation festival at the Eurogress Aachen .

In May 2003, the assembly of all members decided to open Franconia: As a student association at the Aachen university, Franconia is historically rooted at RWTH Aachen University. Now students from other universities in Aachen can also join. On June 30th, 2008 Franconia became the 2000th member of the Aachener Karls- und Dombauverein.

Coat of arms and compasses

The new coat of arms in the colors of the connection is divided into five individual fields. In the upper part, two hands reaching out to each other in front of two crossed torches can be seen on the left. These symbols stand for the principle of "amicitia". To the right of this is the imperial eagle for the "patria" principle. In the lower part there is a cross for “religio” on the left and the connecting colors on the right. In the middle is the circle of connection. The “V” stands for vivat , the “C” for cresceat and the “F” for floreat .

Franconia as a member of the Aachener Cartellverband (ACV)

The Aachen Cartell Association (ACV) is a local association of seven Aachen Cartell associations: the KDStV Franconia, the KDStV Baltia, the KDStV Makaria, the KDStV Marchia, the KDStV Kaiserpfalz, the KDStV Bergland and the KDStV Ripuaria. As a result of the merger in the ACV, additional program items in the semester program are coordinated with the other Aachen Cartell connections. The close connection with the other connections is also shown in the fact that Franconia has contributed to the establishment, re-establishment and relocation of local connections:

  • Since Franconia had too much activity in 1920, the KDStV Kaiserpfalz was founded, which from then on was to support the "Franconians" as a subsidiary.
  • When the KDStV Bergland moved from Freiberg to Aachen in 1925 due to insufficient membership , it was supported by members of Franconia in forming a new board.
  • In 1951 the KDStV Saxo-Thuringia Dresden (now in Bochum) was re-established in Aachen. Here, too, the help of the "Franks" was provided to enable an appropriate new start.
  • In 1953, student associations in the eastern part of Berlin were banned, which is why the KDStV Makaria Berlin moved to Aachen. As this also resulted in a lack of staff, members of the KDStV Franconia and KDStV Marchia helped to re-establish this connection in Aachen in the former Franconia house.

Night watchman of the Aachen Cathedral

For over 50 years only "Franks" have been hired to ensure the security of Aachen Cathedral through several night tours. This activity has its origins in the historic cathedral guard during World War II . In the 1950s, on the initiative of Cathedral Prelate Erich Stephany , who has been a member of Franconia since student days, volunteers were sought for this office and found among Aachen's Catholic student body. When members of the Catholic University Community re-established the KDStV Franconia Aachen, its members also began to take part in the (nightly) cathedral guard. Over time, only members of the KDStV Franconia provided these night watchmen . It is guaranteed that a Franke will keep watch at night 365 days a year so that no damage occurs (e.g. fire or burglary). The former voluntary service is now performed for a fee.

Linked to the cathedral by the cathedral guard, the association is also involved in the Karls- und Dombauverein. In 2008, on the 50th anniversary of the takeover of the cathedral guard, she became the 2,000 member of the association. In 2008, the student union took over one of the sponsorships for the restoration of the dome mosaic.
