Eberhard Schnepf

Eberhard Schnepf (born April 4, 1931 in Nuremberg ; † April 10, 2016 ) was a German biologist who taught at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . His botanical author's abbreviation is " Schnepf ".

Life

After an apprenticeship as a gardener, Schnepf studied botany , zoology , chemistry and physics at the University of Munich from 1952 . Since it was not possible to study phytopathology in Munich , he moved to the University of Bonn in 1954 , where he was awarded a doctorate in 1958 for his work on the representation and construction of ectodesms . After completing his doctorate , he worked as a scientific assistant at the Botanical Institute of the Philipps University in Marburg , where he laid the basis for his habilitation in 1963 with his work on cell biology and physiology of the plant glands. This was followed by two years as a lecturer at the Plant Physiological Institute of the Georg-August University in Göttingen . During this time he analyzed endosymbiotic organisms, including the algae Glaucocystis and Geosiphon .

In 1966 he became an associate professor at the chair for cell theory and biological electron microscopy at Heidelberg University. In 1970 he was appointed full professor and held the chair until his retirement in 1996. His research areas included the ultrastructure of plant cells, cell compartmentalization , the structure of plant cell walls , the morphogenesis of plant cells, the structure and taxonomy of algae and the symbiogenesis of plastids .

In 1966 he proposed the rule of compartmentalization , according to which membranes divide the cell fluid into a plasmatic and a non-plasmatic phase.
