Eberhard Schulz (Wall victim)
Eberhard Schulz (born March 11, 1946 in Glasow ; † March 30, 1966 in Berlin ) was a victim of the Berlin Wall . During an attempt to escape he was shot dead by members of the GDR border troops .
Life
After the parents separated, the mother moved with her four children to Brusendorf south of Berlin. After finishing school, Eberhard Schulz started to work on a state-owned estate in Boddinsfelde . He spoke to his friend Dieter K. about a possible escape to the West . The discussion continued in her circle of friends, from which other young men expressed their interest.
On the evening of March 29, they stole a bolt cutter from their factory and rode their bicycles to Großziethen , 20 kilometers away on the border. Although the border fortifications at this point are more developed than they expected and they lost their bolt cutters, they tried to escape. Dieter K. had already climbed over the hinterland fence when he set off the alarm. Both men lay down on the floor and stopped moving until three border guards came up to them and asked them to stand up with their hands up. The border guards had not yet seen Eberhard Schulz, who was still outside the death strip. According to Dieter K.'s version, one of the border guards immediately opened fire on Schulz. In the version of the border guards, Schulz had reached into his jacket and tried to flee, which the shots were supposed to prevent. Two bullets hit Schulz in the face and neck. He died on the spot. Dieter K was arrested and spent two years in the MfS prison in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen .
The public and the West Berlin authorities only became aware of the case in 1991 after the end of the GDR. The preliminary investigation initiated by the Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office in 1991 was discontinued in 1996 because the events could not be clarified clearly enough.
