Eberhard Stilz (born May 30, 1949 in Kleinbottwar ) is a German lawyer and judge . From 2002 to 2018 he was President of the State Court for the State of Baden-Württemberg, which was renamed the Constitutional Court for the State of Baden-Württemberg in December 2015 .

Life

Eberhard Stilz was born the son of a laborer and grew up in simple circumstances. After graduating from Mörike-Gymnasium in Ludwigsburg , he studied law and philosophy at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen from 1968 to 1973 . He then completed his legal clerkship at the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court by the end of 1975 . On January 2, 1976, he entered the higher judicial service of the state of Baden-Württemberg and took up a position as a judge at the Tübingen regional court . In the same year he switched to the service of the Ministry of Justice of Baden-Württemberg , where he first worked in the prison department and then until 1990 in the personnel, organization and budget department. In 1980 he was promoted to government director, in 1988 he was appointed Ministerialrat.

After the political change in the GDR , on August 1, 1990, Stilz was entrusted with the management of the coordination committee for the establishment of the justice system in Saxony and participated in the re-establishment of the state as deputy state structure commissioner for justice and as head of the judicial administration team. After reunification , on November 8, 1990, he was appointed State Secretary in the State Ministry of Justice of the Free State of Saxony . He held this position until the summer of 1992 under Justice Minister Steffen Heitmann .

Stilz then returned to Baden-Württemberg and served as presiding judge at the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court from 1992 to 1994. From 1994 to 1996 he was ministerial director of Department I, responsible for budget, administration, human resources, law and media, in the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg . From October 1996 until the end of 2012 he was President of the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court. In addition, he headed the 20th civil senate there.

Stilz was elected a member of the State Court of Justice for the state of Baden-Württemberg in 2000, and was elected President in 2002. The presidency and his duties for the court as a whole ended in July 2018.

Furthermore, Stilz is a partner and curator of the Robert Bosch Foundation GmbH, a member of the Wüstenrot Foundation eV, board member of the Juristic Society Tübingen eV and since March 2013 President of the Global Ethic Foundation . He is a member of the CDU .

Eberhard Stilz is married and has three children.
