Eberhard von Oertzen (born April 26, 1856 in Dorow , Regenwalde district , Western Pomerania ; † July 11, 1908 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ) was a German naturalist and private scholar.

family

Eberhard von Oertzen came from the old Mecklenburg noble family von Oertzen . He was the third son of Adolf von Oertzen (1825-1857) to Dorow and his wife Anna, geb. Countess Reichenbach-Goschütz (1828–1904). He had two older brothers: the later Lieutenant General Victor von Oertzen (1854–1934) and Karl von Oertzen (1855–1907), the owner of the Dorow estate. After the early death of his father, his mother and her three small children first moved to Treptow an der Rega and then to Frankfurt (Oder) because of school . He then attended the Ilfeld monastery school until he graduated from high school. He married the pastor's daughter Gertrud Bachmann (1878–1952) from Heldrungen in Berlin-Charlottenburg late on October 5, 1906. From this marriage a daughter (Wiltrud) was born.

Life

Raised pietistically by his mother , he studied natural sciences and philosophy after completing his military service. The incompatibility of religious doctrines and the then emerging new scientific discoveries brought him into serious conflicts at times. He dealt with all the questions that concerned him in writing. The records have been preserved and reflect the trends of the 19th century.

As a member of the Geographical Society in Berlin and partly with the support of state natural science museums, he made numerous trips through Europe , Turkey and parts of Asia Minor in order to collect for them. The catalogs of his collections, which he compiled in meticulous detail and which consisted mainly of snail shells and stones and which were printed, were valuable scientific material in his time, which earned him recognition as a natural scientist and private scholar in professional circles. His extensive mollusc collection is now in the Zoological Institute of the University of Hamburg . He turned down the offer of employment at a Berlin museum in order to maintain his independence as a private scholar.
