Victor von Oertzen

Victor von Oertzen (born March 27, 1854 in Dorow , † December 27, 1934 in Bäk ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

He comes from the old Mecklenburg noble family Oertzen and was the eldest son of Adolf von Oertzen (1825-1857), Herr auf Dorow, and his wife Anna, née Countess Reichenbach-Goschütz (1828-1904). Karl (1855–1907) and Eberhard (1856–1908) were his younger brothers. After the early death of his father, his mother and her three small children first moved to Treptow an der Rega and then to Frankfurt (Oder) because of school . He later attended the Ilfeld convent school .

He married on October 28, 1878 in Paris Grace Hoffmann-Burnett (1860-1945), daughter of the American Rauhreiter general Henry Lawrence Burnett from New York . The marriage remained childless.

After visiting a cadet institute , Oertzen joined the Hessian Leibdragoner Regiment No. 24 in Darmstadt . He was an excellent rider who competed in many races and won prizes. As a cavalry captain he led a squadron in the royal hussars in Bonn , was major in the hussars in Schleswig , then colonel and commander of the 2nd Pomeranian Uhlan Regiment No. 9 in Demmin . On June 19, 1909, Oertzen was appointed commander of the 25th Cavalry Brigade (Grand Ducal Hessian) in Darmstadt and promoted to major general on September 10, 1910 . In 1912 he had to say goodbye for health reasons.

At the beginning of the First World War , Oertzen was reused and on August 2, 1914 was appointed commander of the 33rd Landwehr Infantry Brigade, with which he participated in the Battle of Tannenberg . He handed this command over to his successor Albano von Jacobi on October 14, 1914 .

Oertzen spent his retirement on a small agricultural property in Bäk near Ratzeburg, where he died on December 27, 1934. He was buried in the family cemetery in Dorow.
