Eberhart Zrenner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eberhart Zrenner (born October 18, 1945 in Munich ) was Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Tübingen and Director of the Research Institute for Ophthalmology at the University Eye Clinic in Tübingen . Since April 2013 he has been a senior professor at the Werner Reichardt Center for Integrative Neurosciences (CIN).

Career

Zrenner is head of an interdisciplinary research group that has been developing an electronic retinal implant (a light-sensitive neuroprosthesis ) since the mid-1990s . This approximately 3 × 3 mm "eye chip" can be inserted under the retina in patients who have become blind in the course of their lives due to the loss of photoreceptors . There the bipolar cells that are still present are electrically stimulated . So far, the test subjects have been able to differentiate between light and dark and in some cases horizontal and vertical lines. In the long term, it is hoped that, similar to the cochlear implant for the deaf , an implant will be developed that gives the blind at least a certain ability to see (orientation in space, large objects, etc.). For this work he was awarded the Bartimaeus Prize in 2006 . In March 2007, the results of an initial trial on 7 patients were presented to the public. In December 2009 he received the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize , and in 2012 he was the first German to receive the Ludwig von Sallmann Prize, endowed with US $ 35,000. In 2013 he was awarded the Hector Science Prize, endowed with 150,000 euros, and was accepted into the Hector Fellow Academy .

After his retirement in April 2013 he was appointed to a senior professorship at the Werner Reichardt Center for Integrative Neurosciences (CIN). For 2016, Zrenner was awarded the Graefe Medal, which is only awarded every 10 years .

Eberhart Zrenner is the founder and chairman of the supervisory board of Retina Implant AG ( Reutlingen ), a spin-off from the University of Tübingen that manufactures the retinal implant. He is also a member of the Science Council , the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences (since 1996) and the Leopoldina (since 1997). He has also been a member of the University Council of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg since 2007 . He is chairman of the Scientific and Medical Advisory Board (WMB) of Pro Retina Germany .
