Echinocereus waldeisii is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus (section Wilcoxia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors Dieter Waldeis , who discovered the species.

description

Echinocereus waldeisii grows with one main branch , which can form several side branches. It forms up to eight carrot-like rhizomes. As a rule, the plant always grows in symbiosis with Creosot bushes ( Larrea tridenta ) over mycorrhiza , where the thin shoots can also lean against.

The green, slender and cylindrical shoots are 0.5 to 1.5 cm in diameter and can reach heights of over two meters. There are eight low ribs that are slightly humped. The thorn pads are composed of 20 to 27 radial spines and 6 to 10 central spines, which reach a length of 4–8 mm.

The funnel-shaped flowers are light to creamy yellow in color, with brown central stripes on the outer petals. They usually appear from the shoot tips and are up to 5 cm long and up to 6 cm in diameter.

ripe fruits

The olive-green to brownish fruits are egg-shaped and have few thorn pads that fall off when ripe. The fruits have a pleasantly fruity, sweet taste and can reach a size of up to 2.5 cm.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus waldeisii is a steno-endemic species of the Mier y Noriega region, the border area of the Mexican states of Nuevo León , Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosi . It is considered endangered because it only grows in a few, specialized locations in its range.

The first description by Erich Haugg was published in 1993. Synonyms are Echinocereus tamaulipensis subsp. waldeisii (Haugg) Mich. Lange (1995) and Echinocereus tamaulipensis subsp. deherdtii Mich . Lange (1995) .

Echinocereus waldeisii was considered a synonym for Echinocereus poselgeri in the past . The isoenzyme analysis of the species in the Echinocereus sect section, suggested by Dieter Waldeis and carried out by Monika Konnert ( Bavarian Office for Forestry Seed and Plant Breeding ) in 2002 . Wilcoxia showed clear genetic differences between the species in the dissection. Studies published in 2014 on the phylogenetic relationships in the genus Echinocereus confirm the recognition of Echinocereus waldeisii as an independent species.
