Echinocereus sect. Wilcoxia is a section within the genus Echinocereus . The botanical name Wilcoxia honors the American general Timothy E. Wilcox (1840–1932).

The species of the section Wilcoxia differ from other species of the genus Echinocereus by the long, thin shoots and the beet-like thickened roots .
Systematics and distribution
The species of the section Wilcoxia are distributed in the United States in the south of the state of Texas and in the Mexican states of Coahuila , Durango , Nuevo León , Tamaulipas , San Luis Potosí , Sinaloa , Sonora and Querétaro .
The genus Wilcoxia was established in 1909 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose with four species, as their habitus differed from that of the other species of the genus Echinocereus . They chose Echinocereus poselgeri as the type species .
In his 1985 revision of the genus Echinocereus , Nigel Paul Taylor put the genus Wilcoxia as a section Echinocereus sect. Wilcoxia into the genus Echinocereus and assigned three species to it.
