The glands Hairy Kugeldistel ( Echinops spinosissimus ) is a plant from the genus Echinops in the family of Compositae (Asteraceae).

features

The glandular-haired ball thistle is a perennial stem hemicryptophyte that reaches heights of 50 to 80, rarely up to 200 centimeters. The stem is densely spiderweb-tomentose and has 1 to 2 millimeters long, dark glandular hairs. The leaves are usually twice pinnate. The head stand is spherical. The bracts are arranged in groups of 20 each. The outer bracts are split in a bristle shape and up to half as long as the head, the others are spatulate and pointed. Some of the middle bracts have thorns that are 20 to 50 millimeters long and protrude above the heads.

The flowering period extends from July to October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.

Occurrence

Echinops spinosissimus occurs in the eastern Mediterranean and in North Africa (west to Morocco). The species grows on fallow land, dry ruderal sites, olive groves, sandy coasts and overgrazed Phrygana .

  • Echinops spinosissimus subsp. bithynicus (Boiss.) Greuter (Syn .: Echinops bithynicus Boiss. ): It occurs in Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Crete and the Aegean Sea.
  • Echinops spinosissimus subsp. bovei (Boiss.) Greuter (Syn .: Echinops bovei Boiss. ): It occurs in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya.
  • Echinops spinosissimus subsp. chaetocephalus (Batt.) Sennen & Mauricio : It occurs in Morocco.
  • Echinops spinosissimus subsp. fontqueri (Pau) Greuter (Syn .: Echinops fontqueri Pau ): It occurs in Morocco.
  • Echinops spinosissimus subsp. macrolepis (Boiss.) Greuter (Syn .: Echinops viscosus subsp. macrolepis (Boiss.) Feinbrun ): It occurs in Syria, Lebanon and Israel.
  • Echinops spinosissimus subsp. neumayeri (Vis.) Kožuharov (Syn .: Echinops neumayeri Vis. ): It occurs in Italy, Croatia, Albania and Greece.
  • Echinops spinosissimus subsp. spinosus Greuter : It occurs in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, Libya, Egypt and on the Sinai peninsula.
  • Echinops spinosissimus Turra subsp. spinosissimus : It occurs in Greece, Turkey, Crete and the Aegean Sea.
