Echinopsis antezanae is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet antezanae honors the Bolivian agronomist and director of the Forestry Division of Oruro Lucio Antezana , who supported Martín Cárdenas on one of his tours.

description

Echinopsis antezanae grows branched from the base with one to five thick, columnar shoots that reach heights of up to 5 meters. The cylindrical shoots are strong and reach a diameter of up to 25 centimeters. There are 15 to 30 ribs . The white areoles on it are close together. From them arise ten to 27 thin, needle-like thorns , which lie somewhat on the surface of the shoot and are often interwoven. Some of the yellowish to brownish, 2 to 20 centimeters long thorns are bent back.

The white to light yellow, reddish-tinged flowers appear in groups at the tip of the shoot and open at night. They are 10 to 14 centimeters long. The spherical, yellowish green fruits have a diameter of 2.5 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis antezanae is widespread in the Bolivian department of Oruro .

The first description as Trichocereus antezanae by Martín Cárdenas was published in 1953. Heimo Friedrich and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in 1974 in the genus Echinopsis . Echinopsis antezanae is related to Echinopsis tarijensis .

A nomenclature synonym is Helianthocereus antezanae (Cárdenas) Backeb. (1955).
