Eckehard Schöll is married, has two children and a grandchild.

Schöll studied physics at the University of Tübingen (diploma 1976) and then completed a PhD in mathematics at the University of Southampton in 1978 (doctoral supervisor Peter T. Landsberg ). In 1981 he finished his doctorate as Dr. rer. nat. with Friedrich Schlögl . He was visiting assistant professor at Wayne State University in Detroit from 1983-84 and subsequently (1985) visiting scholar at the University of Florida . In 1986 he completed his habilitation in theoretical physics at RWTH Aachen University (mentor was Friedrich Schlögl). From 1986 to 1987, Eckehard Schöll was visiting professor at RWTH Aachen University before moving to TU Berlin . Eckehard Schöll has been a professor at the Technical University of Berlin since 1989 and has supervised over 100 diploma, master and bachelor theses, 30 doctoral students and 2 habilitation theses. From 2001 to 2011 he was managing director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics. He participated in many joint research projects and has been the spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center SFB 910 of the German Research Foundation (DFG) on the topic of Control of Self-Organizing Nonlinear Systems since 2011 .

Eckehard Schöll is a liaison professor at the German National Academic Foundation and a long-standing member of the Fulbright Commission's selection committee . During the education strike in 2009 he gave a protest lecture in front of the Rotes Rathaus in the center of Berlin.
