Social pastoral positions

Age and Society

With a view to care for the elderly, for which Steinhaeuser was responsible for the Diakonisches Werk Bayern, the theologian pleaded against the "idolatry of youth into old age" and advocates that in our society one can "grow old and be old with dignity" . This does not mean, of course, "to push old people into a ghetto of passivity and incapacitate them through over-care, but to encourage them to participate actively in social life through incentives and offers that are age-appropriate." Here Steinhaeuser is in line with gerontology , as represented by Hans Thomae and Ursula Lehr .

Subsidiary aid

Hartmut Mehdorn , former CEO of Deutsche Bahn AG , had called for food serving for the homeless in the station mission at the zoo to be stopped, a statement that was controversial in public . A survey among rail customers of the working group “Living with the homeless”, however, showed that rail customers are more tolerant: When asked whether train stations should remain public places including food distribution , 1873 respondents answered “Yes”. Only 49 citizens rejected this. As a deaconry representative, Eckhard Steinhäuser stated that the food on offer at the Zoo station is necessary for socio-political reasons and should be maintained. Relocation is possible, "but at most as a supplement, not as a replacement for the offer."

Awards
