Ed Allen (musician)

Edward "Ed" Clifton Allen (born December 15, 1897 in Nashville , Tennessee , † January 28, 1974 in New York City , New York ) was an American trumpeter of traditional jazz .

Life

Allen grew up in St. Louis , learned the piano and cornet; from 1916 he played full-time in St. Louis pubs and rest houses, later on river steamers between St. Louis and New Orleans a . a. with Charlie Creath and Fate Marable ; from 1922 with his own band. Played for Earl Hines in Chicago in 1924 . Went to New York City for an Ed Daily show where he played in Joe Jordan's revue orchestra from 1925 to 1927 , with Leroy Tibbs in the late 1920s ; accompanied Clarence Williams on recordings (in which Bessie Smith sang in particular , such as Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out ), King Oliver and others. In the 1930s Allen was engaged in various dance orchestras, in the early 1940s with Tony Pastor , from the mid-1940s to 1963 with Benton Heath . In 1961 he still recorded with Elmer Snowden .
