Edwin Turney

Edwin James Turney (born March 26, 1929 in Brooklyn , New York ; † October 15, 2008 ) was a co-founder of Advanced Micro Devices and vice president of the company between 1969 and 1974.

Career

Turney was trained in electrical engineering at the Naval Station Great Lakes Training Center of the US Navy . After completing his military service, he worked as a technician in various companies. In 1969 he was employed by Fairchild Semiconductor as a sales engineer, in the same year the company was taken over by Motorola . Within two years, Turney was able to work his way up to Head of Sales and Marketing in Silicon Valley .

AMD was founded on May 1, 1969 by Turney and Jerry Sanders under the name Sanders Association and was registered in the US state of Delaware . Turney was initially responsible for worldwide purchasing and sales, customer service and other administrative functions. In 1974 Turney moved to the top management of Electronic Arrays . The company was the world's leading RAM manufacturer in the mid-1970s and was later taken over by NEC . In 1976, Turney moved to the semiconductor manufacturer Intersil as Vice President . He received the EFFIE Award for his advertising campaign there .
