Intersil 4096-bit EPROM in CMOS technology from 1978

The Intersil Corporation is an international semiconductor manufacturer , which increased since February 2017 Renesas belongs. The company is based in Milpitas , California . A wafer fab is operated in Palm Bay , Florida . The German branch is in Ismaning near Munich.

history

Intersil was founded in 1967 by Jean Hoerni to manufacture integrated circuits (IC) for digital watches . The CMOS technology used for this initially had the disadvantage that relatively high voltages were required for its operation. Because mercury oxide batteries only emit 1.35 volts, they wanted to be able to operate the integrated circuits with this low voltage. The Japanese company Daini Seikosha contracted Intersil to develop such a watch circuit. Thanks to the newly introduced ion implantation , such clock circuits could be delivered to Seiko in 1970 . Such CMOS-IS were key elements for the first mass-produced and marketed LCD digital watches from Seiko.

When the first commercial microprocessors appeared in the 1970s , Intersil brought out the IM6100 in 1975, which had the unusual word length of 12 bits and was the first microprocessor to be manufactured in CMOS technology. It could process the instruction set of the DEC mini computer PDP-8 . In addition to digital circuits such as microprocessors and memories, such as. B. 1k- × 1-bit CMOS-RAM IM6508 and CMOS-EPROMS IM6604 / IM6654, Intersil brought out successful analog ICs such as the signal generator ICL8038. Intersil converted many of its competitors' circuits to CMOS. B. Signetics popular bipolar timer chip NE555 released as ICM7555 and General Instruments PMOS UART chip AY-5-1013A (TMS6011 from Texas Instruments ) released as IM6402.

In 1988 Intersil was taken over by Harris Corporation , which at the time was itself manufacturing semiconductors and among others. a. produced the IM6100 as a second source . Harris combined these activities with the acquired semiconductor businesses of Radiation Incorporated , General Electric and RCA . In 1999, Harris spun off the semiconductor division again under the name Intersil . The product range then switched to analog semiconductors; digital products were largely discontinued.

In February 2008, Dave Bell succeeded the previous CEO Rich Beyer; The previous five business areas were also reduced to two. On March 22, 2010, Intersil acquired the semiconductor developer Techwell for $ 370 million.

In September 2016, Renesas announced that it had agreed to acquire Intersil for $ 3.2 billion. Renesas wants to focus more on the automotive sector with the increasing trend towards self-driving cars . The acquisition was completed in February 2017.

Products

The product range mainly includes analog ICs . Their main areas of application are desktop and notebook PCs, cell phones , portable media players , flat screens , fire control systems and control devices in space technology . Intersil's 47 product families include components and assemblies for amplifiers , analog front ends, communication interfaces, data converters, digital potentiometers , display controls, DSL solutions, optical network products and power supply technology . The digital division mainly comprises processors and analog-to-digital converters, the designs of which come from previous company takeovers. Some of the ICs are also available in a radiation-protected version, making them suitable for use in the aerospace industry.
