Edgar Madi

Edgar Madi (born March 23, 1956 in Beit-Mery , Lebanon ) is a Maronite clergyman and bishop of São Paulo in Brazil .

Life

Edgar Madi passed his Abitur in 1977 and studied from 1977 to 1981 at the University of La Sagesse in Beirut and at the Holy Spirit University in Kaslik near Beirut. He was ordained a priest on August 14, 1983 in Beirut . From 1983 to 1984 he was General Secretary of the Maronite Synod of Bishops in Beirut. Between 1984 and 1988 he was the parish priest in Mansurieh (Lebanon). This was followed by an activity in Boston ( USA ). There he worked mainly in the field of education . He then assisted as a pastor in a Beirut parish and in a Latin parish in Boston. In 1991 he returned to the University of Kaslik and received his doctorate in philosophy . Between 1991 and 2001 he stayed in Brazil for several weeks. He speaks Portuguese, French, English and Arabic.

He was appointed Bishop of São Paulo on October 14, 2006. The Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and the whole of the Orient , Nasrallah Pierre Cardinal Sfeir , donated him episcopal ordination on November 26, 2006 . Co- consecrators were Paul Youssef Matar , Archbishop of Beirut , and his predecessor, the bishop emeritus of São Paulo, Bishop Joseph Mahfouz OLM . The official assumption of office took place on December 10, 2006.
