The Grupo Abril is a Brazilian media company and was designed by Victor Civita in 1950 in São Paulo under the name Editora Abril started and is now the largest publishing company in South America . Today the group is led by his son Roberto Civita , head of the board and at the same time editorial director since 1968. The flagship publication is the news magazine Veja . The women's magazines dominate the market. Other publications include the renowned football magazine Placar and the Brazilian editions of international titles such as Playboy and Cosmopolitan .

It all began in the metropolis of Sao Paulo when the Italian-American Victor Civita brought out the first publication "Pato Donald" ( Donald Duck ) with no more than half a dozen employees . Civita called his company "Abril" ( German : April) because spring begins in Europe this month. The logo was a green tree, a symbol of growth, the nucleus of life and a symbol of fertility, hope and optimism. Publications for young people were quickly added, such as B. Mickey Mouse , Tio Patinhas , Luluzinha , Zé Carioca , Superman , Turma da Mônica , Menino and Maluquinho Recreio .
In the meantime, Abril has grown into one of the largest and most influential communications companies in Latin America . Over 7400 employees work in the group today. In May 2006, the South African media group Naspers acquired a 30% stake in Editora Abril. The core and origin of the group of companies is the printing and publishing house Editora Abril . In 2010 the company published 370 titles with a total print run of 194.3 million copies. Editora Abril reaches almost 30 million readers, including 4.4 million subscribers. Seven out of ten magazines in Brazil come from the Abril Group's printing presses, including the Group's “flagship”, Veja magazine , the third largest weekly news magazine in the world and largest outside the United States . As a weekly magazine, the print edition of Veja offers up-to-date information on developments in Latin America and around the globe in the areas of politics, economy and culture, while the website veja.com has 2.2 million unique visitors and 22.1 million page views per month (2010) .
Abril is also the market leader in Brazil for school books. Around 38 million of these were printed in 2010.
