life and work

Edmond Delphaut was born in 1891 as the son of Pierre Delphaut and Marie Françoise Goffette in the 19th district of Paris.

During World War I Edmond Delphaut fought as an adjutant in the 153rd Infantry Regiment. During the Battle of Verdun he was captured and taken to the Königsbrück prisoner-of-war camp in Germany. In 1918 he was commissioned to erect a memorial on the prisoner of war cemetery. The finished sculpture, the image of a reclining Serbian soldier, was his first known major work. It was inaugurated on September 4, 1918 in Koenigsbrück as a monument in memory of deceased Serbian soldiers.

After his return from Germany, Delphaut married Marcelle Grulois from Lille, eight years his junior, on December 11, 1920 in Malo les Bains . The artist had two daughters and a son.

In Malo les Bains, Edmond Delphaut took on the order for a large war memorial worth 110,000 francs. The unveiling of this work of art was celebrated on June 23, 1935. In the years that followed, the sculptor created numerous other monuments, for example in Longuyon , Baslieux , Rehon , Charency-Vezin and Montmédy . In addition, smaller works such as Le Baiser De Meme (German: The Kiss of Meme / Grandma ) and the bust of the little girl made of terracotta were created in his hands .
