Edmund Abesser

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Edmund Alexander Abesser (born January 13, 1837 in Marktgölitz ; † July 15, 1889 in Vienna ) was a German musician, music teacher, composer and pianist.

Life

Edmund Abesser received his first music lessons from his father, the teacher Friedrich Abesser. This taught him on the piano, on the organ and in harmony. Edmund has already submitted 60 compositions for his entrance exam at the Conservatory. He studied from October 4, 1854 to September 29, 1857 at the Leipzig Conservatory . His piano teachers were Ignaz Moscheles and Louis Plaidy . His teachers in music theory were Ernst Friedrich Richter and Moritz Hauptmann . In 1856 he received a scholarship for poor, hardworking and talented students. After completing his studies, he became a court pianist in Meiningen. He lived most of his life in Meiningen and Leipzig . In Leipzig he worked as a salon pianist, composer and piano teacher. In the 1870s he taught at the Academy for Music in Leipzig . Among his students was the singer, composer and music teacher Eugen Lindner (* December 11, 1858, † November 12, 1915), who taught at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1913.

The German Emperor had Abesser in Leipzig hand over a very gracious and appreciative secret cabinet letter in recognition of his op. 162 Biblical Pictures . In 1877 Ernst II , the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha , had him presented with a brilliant ring and expressed his appreciation for his compositions.

Works (selection)

Edmund Abesser was very popular as a composer of salon music in the 19th century. He mainly wrote piano music.

Works with opus number

  • op. 1 Scherzo for piano; Published in 1858 by Eduard Bote & Gustav Bock in Berlin. The work was reviewed in the Neue Berliner Musikzeitung on June 23, 1860. The work is not only worthy of note as op. The reviewer considers it the most important of such first works, both in terms of invention and character, as well as in terms of technical execution. The subordinate sentence is both graceful and funny. And he concludes that the phrase about the justification for high hopes can be accepted again with justification.
  • op. 4 In the dream; Clay paintings; Langensalza; School bookstore
  • op. 5 Spring Polka
  • op. 12 hours of relaxation on the piano; Leipzig, Merseburg. A collection of easy dances for little hands with fingering; Leipzig, Merseburg. The Neue Zeitschrift für Musik from Leipzig writes in its edition of January 20, 1865: We count these among the children's pieces, which should descend to the child with friendly, childlike content, including the dance forms polonaise, waltz, mazurka, polka and gallop vom Composers have been used. If, in such dances, the melody with the most simple harmony only has the task of flattering the ear, then the present dances should at least have a more modern garment, which is by no means particularly the case with the waltz. On the contrary, they belong to their way of setting after a time that has vanished. A too poor imagination must not show itself in such small dances (musical candies).

Full of military music, this “festival march”, SM the King of Prussia, may have an impressive effect. The beginning is reminiscent of Mendelssohn's “wedding march”.

reception

Review in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik on January 20, 1865: There is not much that is pleasant to say about Abesser's other works either; The composer moves everywhere on the heavily used Heerstrasse. The sonatina is a reminder of a bygone time. If one makes do with borrowed money in an op. 24, one can probably assume that there is no imagination of one's own.
