Edmund "Edy" Czaika (according to some sources Czajka ; born January 25, 1924 ) is a former German football player who competed with Hamborn 07 and Meidericher SV in the Oberliga West .

Career

Beginnings in Osterfeld (until 1950)

Czaika's career began shortly after the Second World War at SV Osterfeld 06 from Oberhausen . In the defensive position of the center runner he developed next to the strikers Küppers and Owsiany to one of the most important pillars of the team. At that time the league system was under construction and the SVO played in the district class in 1946/47, which was the second highest league. There Czaika and his teammates competed with other teams from the northern Lower Rhine and together with local rival Elmar Alstaden from Oberhausen took the top position. In the necessary playoff for the championship of Group 3 on June 8, 1947, he could not participate and had to accept a 1: 2 defeat of his colleagues. The resulting missed promotion to the new state league, which was the highest league on the Lower Rhine, was achieved a year later. In the regional league, the Osterfelder were able to assert themselves in the following years. 1950 Czaika left the club to move to Hamborn 07 in the Oberliga West.

Stammkraft in Hamborn (1950–1953)

The 1947 introduced Oberliga West put in front of the Bundesliga launch in 1963 regionalization league system the top flight is on August 27, 1950 Czaika came for the "Lions" from. Duisburg district of Hamborn at a 0: 2 defeat by 1. FC Köln to making his debut in prime. In the following time he took a regular place in the defensive department of his team and in 1952 had to accept relegation to the 2nd League West , mainly due to an extremely weak goal yield in the league comparison. Hamborn clearly missed a possible return to the league in the 1952/53 season. In the summer of 1953, the player managed to return to the West German elite class, since he joined the Duisburg local rivals Meidericher SV .

Return to the major league at MSV (1953–1956)

At MSV, he met his former teammates Kurt Küppers (Osterfeld) and Franz Trapphoff (Hamborn). In the Meiderich defense he found not only considerable competition with Gerd Schönknecht and Kurt Neumann , but also suffered from bad luck with injuries. Accordingly, he was only called up sporadically and did not get past five league appearances between 1953 and 1955. At the end of the season 1954/55 he also had to accept the relegation of his team, with the deficit to the upper half of the table due to a very even distribution of points was only a few points. In the following 1955/56 season, the Meidericher relied primarily on young talent for the ultimately successful project of direct promotion, which is why the 31-year-old Czaika was no longer considered at the beginning of the season and then left the club.
