Ednam House Hotel

The Ednam House Hotel , formerly Havannah House , is a hotel in the Scottish town of Kelso in the Scottish Borders Council Area . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

A native of Kelso, James Dickson left his home after being accused of damaging a well. He moved to North America and made a fortune in particular as a merchant working with the British Navy during the campaign in Havana . After returning home, he hired the Scottish architect James Nisbet to design a mansion on the site of the Chatto Lodging House . The building, initially called Havannah House , was completed in 1761. Around 1845, when Peter Robertson took over the estate, the mansion was redesigned. In the course of the renovation work to a hotel, the north wing was added in 1932; the south wing followed five years later. Another addition on the west side was added in 1955.

description

The Ednam House Hotel is located on the southern edge of Kelso on the left bank of the Tweed not far from the confluence of the Teviot . The ruins of the medieval Kelso Abbey are nearby. The two-story building is designed in a classical style. With the exception of the quarry stone wall on the north side, the masonry consists of polished stone blocks. The east-facing front is three axes wide. The entrance area on the folded, three-axis-wide central risalit is accessible via a fanned-out front staircase with a balustrade . The crowning, segment-arched gable dates back to the middle of the 19th century, as do the flanking side lights. The risalit closes with a stone balustrade. A cornice runs around. The windows are partly designed with bezels and final cornices . The final platform and hip roofs with symmetrically arranged chimneys are covered with slate. The outstanding stucco work inside is attributed to Thomas Perritt and Joseph Rose senior . The doors are made of Cuban hardwood.
