Eduard Gehrmann SVD (born September 20, 1888 in Schalmey near Braunsberg in East Prussia (today Szalmia, Poland), † December 5, 1960 in Siegburg ) was a German religious priest .

Life

Eduard Gehrmann was born as the eldest of 16 children of the master blacksmith and farmer Eduard Gehrmann. The pastor of Schalmey, Georg Matern (clergyman) , recognized the boy's talent and made it possible for Eduard Gehrmann to attend the Heiligkreuz missionary school of the Steyler missionaries in Neisse (Silesia). In 1912 he joined the religious order of the Steyler Missionaries and was ordained a priest in 1915 .

Gehrmann worked as a missionary in the Crimea and led the Steyler group consisting of two priests and a lay brother. In 1923 he replaced the American Jesuit Edmund A. Walsh and became head of the Pontifical Relief Organization for the Relief of the Famine in Russia in Moscow. His efforts to set up an Apostolic Delegate in Moscow were blocked by the Soviet-Russian government. Despite ongoing secret negotiations by Eugenio Pacelli , he was asked to leave the country at the end of August 1924.

On the initiative of Pope Pius XI. Gehrmann was private secretary of the Apostolic Nuncio Eugenio Pacelli (later Pope Pius XII) from 1925 to 1929 and of Cesare Orsenigo from 1930 to 1945 , both in Berlin. Thus he was still involved in the negotiations of the Holy See with the Soviet Union.

From February 1945 he was the managing apostolic nuncio and chargé d'affaires of the apostolic nunciature in Berlin . In 1949 Aloysius Muench was officially appointed to succeed Cesare Orsenigo.

Eduard Gehrmann was a member of the Catholic student association KDSt.V. Borusso-Saxonia Berlin in the CV.
