Georg Matern (clergyman)

Georg Matern (born May 16, 1870 in Mehlsack in Warmia , † October 8, 1938 in Allenstein ) was a German Catholic clergyman and local researcher .

Life

Georg Matern was born in the Braunsberg district in 1870 as the son of the businessman Rudolf Matern and his wife Maria, née Hildebrandt. The younger brother Kurt Matern was an architect and painter.

Georg Matern attended grammar schools in Allenstein and Rößel and studied theology at the Lyceum Hosianum in Braunsberg and in Würzburg. Here he joined the KDStV Markomannia Würzburg in the CV in 1889 . He was ordained a priest on November 6, 1892 in Frauenburg and initially worked as a pastor in Tolkemit . He then traveled to Rome and was chaplain in the German national church Santa Maria dell'Anima , at the same time studied canon law from 1893 to 1985 and received his doctorate on June 28, 1895 as Doctor iuris canonici (Dr. iur. Can.).

After returning to the diocese of Warmia , the bishop appointed him in 1896 Andreas Thiel to chaplain and at the same time he was vicar at Mrs. Burger Cathedral . After about five years he was appointed pastor in the parish of Schalmey (today Szalmia) and from May 1909 he was editor-in-chief of the Ermländische Zeitung . In 1916 Georg Matern was appointed dean of the Deanery Rößel and in 1931 he received the title of prelate . He founded the Caritas Association in Warmia and was its secretary for a while. In September 1936 he moved to Allenstein.
