Eduard "Edi" Hessheimer (born November 23, 1921 in Pressburg , † October 20, 1992 in Berlin ) was a German draftsman, caricaturist and animator.

Life

Eduard Hessheimer was born in Pressburg (today: Bratislava) in the border triangle Slovakia-Austria-Hungary. From 1938 to 1940 he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . He was drafted into the German Wehrmacht in 1940 and wounded in World War II . From 1951 to 1956, Hessheimer studied at the Leipzig College of Graphics and Book Art . He then worked from 1956 to 1960 in the DEFA studio for animated films in Dresden and from 1961 to 1962 in the DEWAG advertising film studio in Berlin. From 1962 until his death he worked as a freelancer. He became known through cartoons, portrait drawings and above all through the humor drawings. He often found the suggestions and ideas in coffee houses, where you could watch him drawing, known and loved with his Viennese charm. After a long illness, he put the pencil down for good in 1992. His son is the photographer Stefan Hessheimer .

“A kymogram is the X-ray image of a moving organ. Eduard Hessheimer makes humor kymograms of an organ: Of the heart: Hessheimer was born on November 23, 1921 in Bratislava, began to study at the Art Academy in Vienna in 1940 and, after the war in 1951, started again at the Academy of Graphics and Book Art to fulfill his lifelong dream. He wants to be an animator. Five years later, Hessheimer works in the DEFA animation studio in Dresden; since 1961 with the advertising film in Berlin. As a freelancer, he also draws his always friendly jokes for newspapers and magazines. And neither Elbe nor Spree waters can wash off his bohemian-Viennese disposition. The coffee house remains his milieu. He sees people from the bottom of their hearts, loves to gently caricature bureaucrats, the military and the horned, and produces snail jokes and elephant jokes in series, invents curious graphic combinations with traffic signs, musical instruments ... and thus constantly builds (kymographic) castles in the air. "
