Eduard Lange (pedagogue)
Eduard Reinhold Lange (born April 16, 1799 in Groß Baudiß near Liegnitz ; † December 28, 1850, presumably in Oels ) was a German high school teacher and classical philologist who published in particular in the field of ancient Greek mythology.
Life
Lange studied in Breslau and Leipzig , where he was also a member of the Greek Society led by Gottfried Hermann . After graduating, Lange 1823 operated briefly as a teacher at Elisabethanum in Wroclaw , habilitation but already in 1824 as a lecturer at the University of Berlin . In Berlin he then also received an apprenticeship at the Friedrichswerder Gymnasium , where he later advanced to the position of vice principal . Lange returned to Silesia in 1838 and took over the management of the ducal high school in Oels . He stayed in this position until his death.
Lange dealt decisively and in a publishing manner with Greek mythology . He received special attention through a public, u. a. About the Jenaische Allgemeine Literaturzeitung , held a dispute with Karl Otfried Müller about his main work Stories of Hellenic Tribes and Cities , which appeared in Breslau in 1824 , more precisely about its expansion to the Dorians . He found support here primarily from Johann Heinrich Voss , who also tried in vain to get Lange to be appointed professor of philology at the University of Heidelberg .
