Eduard Macku

Eduard Macku (born June 30, 1901 in Linz , † April 11, 1999 in Vienna ) was an Austrian composer , conductor and artistic director.

Live and act

As early as 1916, as a middle school student at the Linz State High School , he founded a student orchestra. In 1920 he passed a music examination, in 1921 the artist examination for solo entertainers. In 1923 he founded a children's choir and also worked as choir master of choral societies. After attending the music school and the conservatory in Linz, he took private lessons, but worked until 1934 as an employee of the Upper Austrian regional health insurance fund in Linz. In the next few years he worked as Kapellmeister and singing teacher at the Landestheater Linz and at the Theater Kolosseum in Linz. In 1924 he passed the Kapellmeister exam, then took singing lessons and gained stage experience at the Landestheater (appearances in the armory and in operettas , engagement as buffalo in the Colosseum). In 1936 Macku moved to Vienna; from 1944 he directed entertainment events in the Wiener Konzerthaus .

In 1945 he founded the Vienna Concert and Entertainment Orchestra , which in 1974 was renamed the Franz Lehár Orchestra on an honorary basis , with which he not only held popular Sunday concerts, but also toured Europe (Germany, France, Italy, Scandinavia) as well as Israel and North America (United States of America, Canada) arranged.

Macku is the founding father of the operetta Festival of Bad Ischl and was from 1961 to 1995 the conductor and artistic director. In his specialty, the operetta, Macku saw no nostalgic fad, but rather entertaining music that he wanted to understand from the zeitgeist.

As a composer he created around 60 works.

Macku was buried at Rodaun Cemetery (Group A, number 314A). In Bad Ischl, Prof.-Eduard-Macku-Platz is named after him.
