Life

Gravestone of Eduard Martiny
Gravestone of his friend Friedrich Wilhelm Graf v. Schlitz, called v. Goertz

Martiny studied medicine at the University of Würzburg and published his dissertation in 1833 on the subject of Dissertatio inauguralis medica de Semiotice aetiologica meletemata (Verlag Becker, 1833). He was a friend and doctor of Count Friedrich Wilhelm von Schlitz, called von Görtz (1793–1839). Because of his poor health , he had been prescribed sea baths . Martiny believed, however, that this goal could also be achieved by opening up the salt springs of Salzschlirf. The count accepted this idea and in 1835 had the sources leaned against him .

The Bonifatiusquelle, the upper salt well, was exposed again. A bathtub was set up in a neighboring house and it was filled with buckets from the spring. There was no further expansion of the sources for the time being. But before his death, the count had transferred the feudal rights to Martiny. In 1837 he expanded the bathing business with the help of the local farmers. In return for supporting the expansion of the spring, Martiny granted the citizens of Bad Salzschlirfer the right to draw water there free of charge. That right still applies today. After Martiny had built the first bath house, the royal Bavarian government commissioned him to submit plans for a bath house in Kissingen . In Kreuznach , too , facilities were built based on Martiny's plans and based on the Salzschlirf model.

In 1850, they dared to expand the bathhouse to twelve bathrooms and expand the spa facilities. The application to the electoral Hessian government to found a stock corporation with the participation of the state failed. The expansion of the mineral springs demanded more and more money. Eventually the systems were sold to the state of Hesse for 20,000 guilders . Martiny, founder and former owner of the bath, was hired as a bath doctor for a meager wage .

After the German war of 1866 Kurhessen became part of the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau and Bad Salzschlirf as a Prussian Staatsbad taken. The Franco-German War of 1870/1871 brought an economic boom with the German victory. Since the state already had numerous state baths and only saw a new burden in Bad Salzschlirf, the bath was sold back to Martiny on July 26, 1873 for 12,000 thalers . The state thus released from all obligations. Martiny had succeeded in winning a company of Westphalian donors. This is how the “Bad Salzschlirf Union” came into being. Martiny initially remained their spa doctor and technical manager.

But at the end of 1874 he was relieved of his position after 36 years working for Bad Salzschlirf. He went to Bad Orb as a spa doctor , but soon returned to his beloved Bad Salzschlirf as a terminally ill man, where he died in 1876 as an honorary citizen and medical councilor .
