Eduard Meyen

Maximilian Eduard Meyen (born March 5, 1812 in Berlin , † April 4, 1870 in Danzig ) was a German publicist and is one of the democratically -minded Young Hegelians .

Life

He studied in Berlin and Heidelberg . In 1835 he received his doctorate. phil. He belonged to the group of Young Hegelians ("Doctor Club"). In the years 1838 and 1839 he was editor of the literary newspaper in Berlin. In one of his pamphlets, he sharply criticized Heinrich Leo for having distanced himself from Hegel and for being accepted into the Prussian mansion by Friedrich Wilhelm IV .

He had already made the acquaintance of Arnold Ruge in 1838 . He was an editor for the magazine Athenaeum and was a correspondent for the Rheinische Zeitung . Meyen published two poems by Karl Marx in the short-lived literary journal Athenaeum . At the beginning of the 1840s he belonged to a left-wing group called The Free . Max Stirner and Bruno Bauer were among them . At the beginning of 1843 there was a dispute and break with Marx, also because of the position of the free. Meyen was also involved in the Centralverein for the welfare of the working classes . From 1844 he was a correspondent for the Trierschen Zeitung in Berlin.

In 1844 he had to serve a two-month prison term because he publicly cheered August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben . In 1847 he was arrested for the police banned poem The Silesian Weavers of Heinrich Heine had in public.

During the revolution of 1848 he was a member of the Central March Association . He helped prepare the second Democratic Congress and was also one of the delegates. In 1849 he worked for the Democratic Newspaper. Later he worked for the free trader Julius Faucher . With this he fled to England after the revolution.

Between 1858 and 1868 he worked as an editor for the Berlin Reform. Most recently he was editor of the Danziger Zeitung. Politically, he was initially close to the Progressive Party and later to the National Liberals.
